The Griffs are coming off a successful weekend with a sweep of the
Mercyhurst Lakers. The team picked up a big four points this past
weekend, bringing us closer to the top of the Atlantic Hockey
standings.
It was a hard-fought two games with both contests coming down to
the wire. Mercyhurst is a quality opponent and they battled back
from several deficits over the weekend. Our offense seemed to come
to life like we knew it would and it is something we expected from
our talented players up front.
Both games had a little bit of everything – lots of goals,
big saves by both goalies, big hits, lots of special teams play and
even a penalty shot, cashed in by Cory Conacher. The Mercyhurst
power play kept them in the games but our penalty kill came up with
the big stops at key times over the weekend. All in all, both teams
played well and we are happy to come away with four points.
Once again, after a tough weekend it was nice to relax on a
beautiful Sunday here in Buffalo. After a weekend series, most guys
catch up on sleep and homework, which may have been neglected over
this short week. Hopefully, the boys did this because again the
Griffs have Saturday and Sunday games upcoming against the
University of Connecticut Huskies. We are at home again and both
games are at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. We will be looking to
build on our success from this past weekend, while we try to
improve our record to above .500 in conference play.
I don’t know if anyone noticed around campus but late last
week and over the weekend, there were a few more Griff fans roaming
around. The boys from the prairies on our team had a few visitors
come down and cheer on their friends here in the big city. The five
individuals, who came to watch their buddies, were a great help to
boost the morale of some of the players. We took them around
campus, and they were impressed with Canisius.
The most surprising part of the tour for them was when we took them
to the library. They could not believe the amount of books here and
they just went through all of the aisles for hours pulling out
whatever interested them. I can’t say I was surprised by
their reaction because I remember Pete MacDougall acting in a
similar fashion four years ago. Hopefully our friends made it home
safe and thanks again to all of the people who came out to support
us this past weekend. Until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
