Holy Cross Announces Team Awards and Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team has
announced its team awards for the 2008-2009 season. The awards were
presented at the team’s annual banquet. Sophomore forward
Jordan Cyr (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was named the Team MVP, while
senior defender Shane McAdam (Hamilton, Ontario) received the Dr.
James M. Stewart Memorial Award. Freshman defenseman Kyle Atkins
(Brockville, Ontario) was awarded the Glenn “Spike”
Crane Memorial Award, while freshman forward Jay Silvia
(Burlington, Mass.) received the Seventh Player Award. Senior
co-captain defender Marty Dams (Manotick, Ontario) previously
received the Michael P. Quinn Award given to the best defensive
Holy Cross hockey player over the course of the season.
Cyr led the Crusaders with 19 goals and 32 points. His 19 goals
were the third most for a single-season on the all-time Holy Cross
Division I list. He was also third on the team with 13 assists,
while led the team with four game-winning goals. He was named the
Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week once during the season. In Holy
Cross' three games against Hockey East teams, he had three goals
and three assists for six points, with one assist against
Providence, one goal and one assist at eventual national champion
Boston University and two goals and one assist at No. 15 New
Hampshire. This was Cyr’s first season with the Crusaders as
he transferred from RPI and had to sit out the 2007-2008 season
athletically. Cyr is the first Holy Cross player from Manitoba.
The Dr. James M. Stewart Memorial Award is the Coaches Award given
for commitment, leadership and performance. Despite missing most of
the last two seasons due to an injury, McAdam was a major part of
the team and was determined to contribute any way he could to help
the team. He played in 66 career games with three goals and 16
assists for 19 points. As a freshman he scored three goals and had
nine assists for 12 points, as he also played in the victory over
Minnesota in the NCAA Tournament. McAdam has had major success in
the classroom as he has made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team
in every season.
The Glenn “Spike” Crane Memorial Award is given to the
player who excels most in the little things and leads his teammates
by example. Atkins played in all but one game during the season as
he had an outstanding freshman season. He scored one goal and had
10 assists for 11 points, which were the second most points by a
defender on the team.
Dams, who as a junior received the Glenn "Spike" Crane Memorial
Award, recorded four goals and 20 assists for 24 points in 124
career games. His 124 games played were the most by any Crusader on
the 2008-2009 roster. As a senior he had a career-best two goals
and five assists for seven points. As a junior he recorded a
career-best seven assists and as a sophomore he had one goal and
five assists for six points. As a freshman he played in the win
over Minnesota and had one goal and three assists for four points
on the season. His older brother Jeff, who is a 2004 Holy Cross
graduate, was a member of the hockey team, while his younger
brother Ian is a junior goalie on the team.
The Seventh Player Award is given to the player who performed above
expectations. Silvia, who was named the Atlantic Hockey Rookie of
the Week once, tied for third on the team with 11 goals and ranked
fourth with 21 points as he played in all 38 contests. He also
scored two game-winning goals.
The Holy Cross men’s hockey program has named senior Ryan
Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) and junior Everett Sheen (Lethbridge,
Alberta) as co- captains for 2009-2010.
Driscoll, who was also a captain last season, has played 107 career
games which are the most by any current Crusader. He has 19 goals
and 34 assists for 53 career points. Last season, he set career
best marks with seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points. Both his
freshman and sophomore seasons he scored six goals and had 11
assist for 17 points.
Sheen, who earned Atlantic Hockey All-Rookie Team honors as a
freshman as he led the team with 15 goals, had another outstanding
season as a sophomore as he scored 11 goals, while he had a
career-best 14 assists and a career-best 25 points. His 14 assists
were ranked second on the team, while his 25 points were third and
his 11 goals were tied for third. He has played every game during
his career and already has 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 career
points. He was a member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team as
a freshman.
The Crusaders return 21 players for 2009-2010.
