Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week | |
Junior, Forward, Ashburn, Va. Fairchild was named the Atlantic Hockey Tournament Most Valuable Player, after scoring three of the five Air Force goals in the Semifinals and Finals. Fairchild led the Falcons to their third straight Atlantic Hockey Tournament Crown and the NCAA Touranment. Fairchild was also named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Conference Third Team for his efforts during conference action. | |
Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week | |
Junior, Goaltender, Genoa, Ill. Volkening posted his second and third career shutouts in post-season action for the Falcons. He stopped 51 shots in the two-games at the Blue Cross Arena. Overall at the BCA, Volkening is 5-0 with a 0.93 GAA and a .967 saves percentage. Volkening was named First Team All-Conference as well as to the All-Tournament Team. | |
Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week | |
Freshman, Forward, Dertoit, Mich. Burt was named to the 2009 AHA All-Tournament Team after scoring two goals and adding an assist in RIT’s season ending 5-4 loss to Mercyhurst in the AHA Semifinals at Blue Cross Arena on Friday. Burt sent the game into overtime by scoring with the RIT net pulled with 59.4 seconds left in regulation. He slammed home a loose puck in front. Burt also scored RIT’s first goal of the game, on a slap-shot from the high slot on the power-play late in the first period. Burt also assisted on Alan Mazur’s power-play goal early in the second period. Burt ended the season with 21 points (9-12-21) in his last 17 games and finished his freshman year with 30 points (13-17-30) in 36 games. | |

Steve Cameron - Mercyhurst (So., F, Mission, BC) -
Collected a pair of assists in the Lakers 5-4 overtime victory in
the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals against RIT. Cameron ended the
season with 28 helpers on the year. He was also named to the
Atlantic Hockey All-Conference Second Team. | |

| Atlantic Hockey: Andrew Volkening is the first netminder to
have to consecutive shutouts in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament and
the second to post two shutouts (Tony Quesada, 2004). In his last
five games at the Blue Cross Arena, Volkening has posted three
shuouts and has allowed five goals. Air Force became the first #1
Seed to win the Atlantic Hockey Tournament since Holy Cross in
2006. Air Force becomes the first team to win three Atlantic Hockey
Tournament Crowns, all in a row. Mercyhurst made it five
appearances in the semifinals and its third appearance in the

Player: Matt Fairchild, Air Force. Air Force: Air Force is playing in its third straight NCAA Hockey Tournament. The Falcons are one of just six teams in the field to play in three straight (North Dakota, New Hampshire, Notre Dame, Michigan and Miami)...AFA won its third straight AHA championship last week and improved to 11-1 all-time in the AHA Tournament...AFA is 8-0 in AHA elimination games...AFA improved to 27-10-2 overall, the most wins in school history, breaking the record of 21 Division I wins set last season and 25 overall wins in 1971-72...AFA will face Michigan in the NCAA East Regional. The game marks the second straight year the Falcons will face a CCHA team in the NCAA Regionals. Last year, AFA lost to Miami, 3-2 in overtime, in the Northeast Regional...AFA’s last win over a CCHA team was a 2-0 win over Miami in the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage in 2003...Air Force’s senior class of Greg Flynn, Josh Frider, Michael Mayra, Brent Olson and Mike Phillipich have won three AHA Championships and played in three NCAA Tournaments after winning just 11 games as freshman. The last three years, the class is 67-38-13...Greg Flynn had an assist on Friday and now has 40 points for the season. He is the first Falcon defenseman with 40 or more points since 1994...Andrew Volkening collected shutouts four and five of the season in the AHA Tournament. He now has 10 for his career...Matt Fairchild, the AHA MVP, tied his season highs with two goals in a game (Friday) and three on the weekend at the AHA Tournament...Jacques Lamoureux had a goal on Saturday, his 32nd goal and ninth game winner of the season. He leads the nation in both categories. Bentley: Bentley’s season came to an end on Friday against Air Force in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals. The season will go down as perhaps the best in program history though, as the team recorded the second most wins and most since moving to Division I with 19. They also set records for Atlantic Hockey wins with 15, beat Maine and RPI on the road, defeated Air Force for the team’s first win over a ranked team and beat Mercyhurst twice. Head coach Ryan Soderquist was named Coach of the Year at the Atlantic Hockey awards banquet, the second time in his career he’s been named a coach of the year (MAAC Coach of the Year in 2003). Senior Anthony Canzoneri became the first Bentley player to win both the Best Defensive Forward award and the Individual Sportsmanship Award. Classmate Dain Prewitt was named second team All-Atlantic Hockey, and freshman Kyle Rank was named third team All-Atlantic Hockey and to the All-Rookie team. Prewitt finishes his career tied fourth all-time in points (126), fifth in goals (60) and tied for eighth in assists (66). He set the school’s single-season record for goals at Division I with 21, and recorded the second most points at Division I this season with 42. At Division I, he’s first in career points and second in goals. Canzoneri finishes tied for tenth all-time in points (112), fifth in assists (84) and first at Division I. Jeff Gumaer also finishes with 112 points, and is fourth all-time in goals with 62, which is first at Division I. Prewitt and Gumaer are the first two players in team history to score 60 goals solely at Division I. The trio are also the first players in the school’s Division I history to reach 100 points. They are also the leaders in career games played, with Prewitt and Canzoneri tied for first (145), and Gumaer third (139). Rank’s goals against average of 2.65 is the lowest single-season number in Bentley history. Mercyhurst: The Mercyhurst College saw its season come to an end this past weekend with a 2-0 loss to Air Force in the AHA Championship game in Rochester, N.Y. The Lakers, who finish the year with a record of 22-15-3, fell to the Falcons in the AHA Championship for the second straight year. Mercyhurst reached the title game thanks to a 5-4 OT victory over RIT the night before. Junior Chris Risi lifted the Lakers with his seventh goal of the season coming just 2:19 into the extra-time session. Sophomore Scott Pitt scored two goals while linemates senior Matt Pierce and sophomore Steve Cameron recorded two assists apiece. Sophomore Brandon Coccimiglio added a goal and two assists. The Lakers marked their first 20-plus season since the 2005-06 campaign when they captured their first AHA Title and faced Boston College in the NCAA Tournament. Five different Lakers marked 30-plus points this season, led by Cameron with 50. Sophomore Ryan Zapolski finished the year with an 18-5-3 record. Head coach Rick Gotkin is now 384-252-49 with the Lakers. Rochester Institute of Technology: RIT lost in the 2009 Atlantic Hockey semifinals for the second straight season, 5-4 in overtime to Mercyhurst before 2,555 fans at Blue Cross Arena on Friday. Cameron Burt scored twice and added an assist in the loss, including the game-tying goal with 59.4 seconds left that sent the game to overtime. RIT Head Coach Wayne Wilson will enter the 2009-10 season needing just one win to become RIT’s all-time leader in coaching wins. He is currently tied with Eric Hoffberg, who coached RIT from 1989-99. Both men have 188 wins. Wilson is now 188-91-24 in 10 seasons at RIT. RIT’s 23 wins are a Division I team record and most since the 2001-02 season. RIT and Air Force set AHA regular season records with 20 wins and 42 points. The Tigers finished the season 15-0-1 when leading after two periods, 13-2-1 in the second game of a weekend series and 16-0-0 when scoring at least five goals in a game this season. RIT continues to lead Division I with 12 shorthanded goals, a DI team record. The Tigers could lead Division I in scoring by the end of the season. RIT is currently the top scoring team in Division I in scoring, averaging 3.89 goals per game, just ahead of Mercyhurst, who’s season is complete and Boston University, who still have contests to play. The Tigers enjoyed supremely incredibly balanced scoring all year long, with six players scoring at least 30 points and 15 in double digits. RIT set a Division I team record with 148 goals in 38 games. The 38 games played are the most ever for a Tiger team. The Tiger power-play scored 33 goals over the last 20 games. They are fifth in the nation overall at 21.2 percent. Brennan Sarazin finished the season with 29 points over his last 18 games (12-17-29) and finished with a team-best 42 points (19-23-42) in 38 games. He had scored 48 points over his first 106 career games. Sarazin and Bobby Raymond never missed a game over their four-year Tiger careers, playing in all 144 games RIT competed in. The Tigers are one of the winningest teams in Division I over the last three years. RIT is 63-36-10 over that span, including a 55-20-8 mark in AHA regular season games. Freshman Tyler Brenner is second among all freshmen in scoring with 35 points (14-21-35). The Tigers have a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) on the road. RIT finished 13-5-0 at home this season and scored 91 goals in 18 home games (5.1 per game). The Tigers have lost four straight games at Blue Cross Arena after defeating Cornell, 4-1 in the first game for the Tigers downtown on Oct. 27, 2007. |
